Makapu'u Lighthouse, Oahu
The lighthouse was built in 1909 and automated in 1974. A 2-mile paved trail leads to the lighthouse and a fantastic view of the entire coastline and the island of Molokai in the distance.
The Kaiwi Channel (26 miles Molokai to Oahu) runs past Makapu'u Lighthouse and is an excellent spot to watch Humpback whales as they travel the channel between December and April. (info from Hawaiiweb.com and other sites) Have to admit I just couldn't come up with all of these facts!! :) :) It is a wonderful, fun, easy hike and the views are awesome.

Lighthouses have always fascinated me since I was born in a small town on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. This week-end Split Rock Lighthouse in Minnesota had its annual ceremony honouring the seaman who have died on Lake Superior, reading the 200 plus names and tolling a bell 30 times. Impressive.

I have never been to Hawaii so I especially enjoy looking at your beautiful photographs.

Thanks for visiting my blog. You figured it out right about the 6x6 deal. A bull elk is counted by the points on each antler, expressed by the 6x6 or 9x8, etc. In the eastern part of the U.S. a deer is referred to by his total points. For example 3 points on one antler and 4 on another will be called a seven-point, but in the west they refer to deer the same as elk and would call it a 3x4 buck. Strangely though here in the east we label an elk the same as a westerner does. It doesn't make much sense, but that is how its done.

That's my kind of hike, getting all the exercise you want going up and down while watching whales play in the water. Perfect.

What a cute lighthouse, it's so short but the light is huge. I bet that was a gorgeous walk.

I never really put together the fact that Hawaii having nothing but coastline would also mean you have lighthouses!

What a wonderful photo.
